What is Lumpy Skin Disease

Lumpy skin disease is a viral disease that affects cattle. This disease cannot spread to humans. It causes fever, nodules on the skin and can also lead to death. Control options include vaccinations and culling of infected animals.
Lumpy skin disease can lead to significant economic losses especially to a country like India which is primarily an agriculture-based economy.
What is Lumpy Skin Disease How Bad is the State in India
The current outbreak started in Gujarat and Rajashthan around July and had spread to Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Andaman & Nicobar and Uttarakhand by early August. It then spread to Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. In recent weeks, it was reported in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, and Jharkhand. The virus has infected over 2.4 million cattles as of October 20, 2022. Of these, 1,10,000 cows are killed.
Considering India is rural-dominated, the real numbers are difficult to capture and experts say that the numbers are much-much higher.
